In January, 2009, Kirsten Gillibrand was appointed by Governor David Paterson to serve as a U.S. Senator from New York, filling the Senate seat vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton. She is only the second woman to serve in this capacity. Previously she was elected twice to the U.S. House of Representatives. She is seeking election to her Senate seat in a special election to be held this November.
